What is NT Power & Water’s System?

NT Power and Water runs electricity systems across all of the Northern Territory.

NT Power’s system is made up of many stand-alone microgrids, with larger systems in Darwin which shares its system with Katherine and in Alice Springs. Most towns in the Northern Territory are too far apart to warrant connecting the electricity systems together. Each system includes the infrastructure, poles and wires, and operations required to generate, distribute, and supply electricity to the electricity customers. NT Power and Water own and operate every part of the system.

NT Power and Water allow four electricity retailers to sell the electricity to customers and arrange billing but only in larger centres - Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek or Alice Springs. This is overseen by the NT Electricity System and Market Operator.
